not by his own power: 1 and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty 2 and the holy people. PP 25 And through his policy also he shall cause 3 craft to prosper in his hand; and 4 he shall magnify himself in his heart, and 1 by peace shall destroy many: 5 he shall also stand up against the 6 PRINCE OF PRINCES ; but 7 he shall be broken with- out hand. PPPP 26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days. 27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick cer- tain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it . Religious Note - The philosophy of Confucianism began c. 497 BC when Chiu Kung (born c. 550 - died c. 479 BC), considered the father of Confucianism, taught people to become masters of their own destinies. He was a Chinese sage whose philosophy influenced the civilizations of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Confucius (Grand Master Kung) was a descendant of a wealthy family but was left fatherless at an early age and spent his youth in poverty. In 497 BC at the age of 54, Confucius set out on a 13-year pilgrimage, wandering from state to state with his pupils, about 3,000 in all, of- fering advice and service. He taught that it was man that made truth great. Thus his ideal society started with learning and culminated in peace. Grand Master Kung proposed that only virtuous and talented men should rule and that government should rely on moral example and social education rather than force. Confucius did not speak of spiritual beings and seldom spoke of fate. He advised his followers to “respect the spirits but keep your distance from them.” In short, Confucius, though religious, was more interested in man’s mind and atti- tude than he was in the philosophy of an after-life. After the death of Confucius, Confucianism developed in two directions, one led by Mencius; the other led by Hsun Tzu (c. 298 - 238 BC). Religious Note - Fifty years after Thales of Miletus taught his Ionian science of Nature (the religion of Athe- ism) to the men of Greece, Anaximander of Miletus (c. 550 BC) began to teach his theory of Evolution ( Job 26:7 ). Anaximander, considered the father of Evolution, taught that life was first generated by material process from sea slime (pre-biotic soup). Anaximander was heavily influenced by both Homer and Thales of Miletus ( Dan 1:21 ).

1 In the first year of Darius the son of 8 Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans; 2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to 9 Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. 3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: 4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, 10 the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, 11 and to them that keep his commandments; 5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy pre- cepts and from thy judgments: 6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. 7 O LORD, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the in- habitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee. 8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. 9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have re- belled against him;

READ NEXT - Daniel 5-6 10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. 8:25 Everything written about Antiochus Epiphanes is true of the Antichrist. According to II Thessalonians 2:3-4 and Revelation 13:1-6, the future Antichrist (like Antiochus Epiphanes) will magnify himself above God (Dan 11:36-37).
