to separate himself thence in the midst of the people. 13 And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans. 14 Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes. 15 Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison. 16 When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days; King Zedekiah secretly releases Jeremiah from prison 17 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, 1 thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. P 18 Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison? 19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land? 20 Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou
cause me not to return to the house of Jon- athan the scribe, lest I die there. 21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah 2 into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison. 38:2 Better to “give in” to discipline ( but he that goeth forth ) than “give way” to destruction ( Jere 24:1-5-8 and Heb 12:5-9). We are to learn from life, not live for life. Those who live life without learning from life (without accepting instruction and correction) don’t live very long (Prov 15:10 & 1:20-33 & 9:8-12, Ezk 6 :1- 9 and Jere 8 :1- 4 ). 38:4 Jeremiah didn’t hurt the people; the politicians hurt the people when they convinced the people that their lifestyle was not wrong and that it would not be judged. NOTE – Because of Jeremiah’s stand for good and for God, the princes of Judah (the politicians) considered him a traitor to his country ( for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people ), and sought to silence him by putting him in a dungeon. All too often we make the mistake of assuming that the priorities of God and country are one in the same. All too often they are not. The corrupt politicians of Jeremiah’s day complained that he was weakening the nation and the people’s morale by his stance, and no doubt they were correct. But did this make Jeremiah a traitor? Not on your life. All who truly love God would be wise to follow Jeremiah’s example and put God first, and country a distant second. And when the two are in conflict, like Jeremiah, we must choose to be faithful to God, not country (Acts 5:27-29). Question: Where are you when it comes to God verses country? Where do your loyalties lay?
