ISAIAH 63:3

ISAIAH 63:19

3 1 I have 2 trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. P 4 For the 1 DAY OF VENGEANCE is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. P 5 And I looked, 3 and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and 1 MY FURY , it upheld me. P 6 And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth. P Isaiah’s love and prayer for Israel 7 I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses. 8 For HE said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour. 9 In all their affliction HE was afflicted, and the 4 ANGEL of HIS presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he 5 redeemed them; and he 6 bare them, and carried them all the days of old. 10 But they rebelled, and 7 vexed HIS HOLY SPIRIT : therefore he was turned

to be their enemy, and he fought against them. 11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that 8 brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his 9 HOLY SPIRIT within him? 12 That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, 10 dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name? 13 That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble? 14 As a beast goeth down into the valley, the SPIRIT OF THE LORD caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name. 15 Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where is thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy bowels and of thy mercies toward me? are they restrained? 16 11 Doubtless thou art our father, 12 though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD , art our 13 FATHER , our 14 REDEEMER ; thy name is from everlasting. 17 O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of thine inheritance. 18 The people of thy holiness have pos- sessed it but a little while: our 15 adversar- ies have trodden down thy sanctuary. 19 We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.

63:3 God alone brings His will to pass. He needs no help. And for those who cannot envision the LORD JESUS “trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored,” think again! Lawrence O Richards in Bible Reader’s Companion notes:

Despite the complaints of those who cannot conceive of a God of love taking vengeance, the image of God’s Servant, the Messiah, putting down mankind’s rebellion to establish justice is fully in keeping with the OT’s revelation of the character of God. What should give us pause is not this vision of divine judgment, but our own insensitivity to the injustices God hates. 1

63:10a In spite of all of God’s good intentions toward Israel, they were ungrateful and rebellious. 63:10b According to this verse, the HOLY SPIRIT can be “ vexed .” The Spirit of God, therefore, is a person, not an influence, or a force. His active interest and participation in the affairs of men proves He has a personality (distinctive individual qualities that make up His person - I Cor 2:11b ). Whenever God’s people are rebellious, they vex the HOLY SPIRIT . 63:16 What does it mean to be eternal ( everlasting )? Consider the great depth of this word eternal . The eternal is that which is not measured by duration, which has no succession of years, and cannot be described as past or future. It is the dateless present, and can only be used of God, because He lives in the eternal now. He never was and never will be anything that He is not at this present moment. NOTE – All three Persons of the Triune Godhead are eternal ( Isa 63:16 and Hab 1:12 , Mic 5:2 , Jn 12:34 , I Tim 1:17 , Heb 7:15-16 , and Heb 9:14 ) and eternally immutable ( Rom 1:20b ). 1 Richards, Lawrence O.
