The gift of salvation is for everyone (Note - This portion of Isaiah’s prophecy took place in the 27th year of King Hezekiah’s reign) Date Written - c. 700 BC/AM 3300 5 Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and 10 nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God , and for the HOLY O N E of Israel; for HE hath glorified thee. P 6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 55:1a Because the MESSIAH has accomplished His mission (Isa 53-54), those who are “thirsty” spiritually ( every one that . thirsteth ) are invited to drink freely from the WATERS of salvation (Jere 2:13, Jn 4:10-14 and Rev 22:17). 55:1b The same is true for those who “hunger” (spiritually speaking). They too are invited to eat without paying from the BREAD of life (Jn 6:35 & 7:37). The point being: Salvation is a gift, which cannot be bought (Rom 5:15-18 & 6:23 and Eph 2:8-9) 55:2 It is a waste of one’s time and effort to seek that which is ultimately not beneficial for the future ( for that which is not bread ). Unfortunately, it is possible to get caught up in the temporal blessings of life and miss its whole purpose ( Lk 12:13,14,20 and II Cor 4:18 ). 55:3 The same MERCIES promised to David (the promise of salvation through the death, burial and resurrection of CHRIST - Acts 13:34/II Sam 7:12-16, Psa 89:20-29, II Chro 6:42 and Jere 33:25-26) are promised to all ( every one that thirsteth - vs 1). Evangelist Hyman Appelman in Come Unto Me notes: This is by far the greatest, the choicest, the clearest invitation from God to the hearts of men in the entire Old Testament. It is parallel to that other great invitation in the New Testament, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” God is so anxious for the children of men to understand His will for their welfare, to appreciate His compassion for their desperate condition, that He exhausts, and I speak reverently, even His own great ability in the use of language to press upon our souls the burning pleadings of His own passionate heart that we might turn, repent, and find rest, eternal rest. 1 This “everlasting covenant,” also called the New Covenant ( Jere 31:31 /Heb 13:20 and Lk 22:20), is as enduring as the covenant made with Abraham (Gal 3:16-18 and Heb 8:6 -7) and David (II Sam 7:12-16). 55:5 Because GOD will have glorified the MESSIAH (raised CHRIST from the dead), the Gentile nations, who did not know Him previously, shall come to salvation in droves (Acts 13:46). 55:6 People are admonished not to wait to need God…to need God, for there may come a time when “too late” will be written on all efforts to gain the inheritance which has been forfeited by neglect (II Cor 6:2). 55:7 God is not the cruel and vindictive person that many make Him out to be (Ezk 18:21-23). Sadly, there are some who have portrayed the God of the Old Testament as a harsh, brutal and bloodthirsty God who orders the extermination of helpless people. However, this premise couldn’t be farther from the truth. While it is true that God is stern and just where He must be, it is also true that He is always merciful and kind ( he will abundantly pardon ) where He can be. 1 Appelman, Hyman J. Come Unto Me , Grand Rapids, MI, Zondervan, 1945. Print. 1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the 3 WATERS , and he that hath no money; 4 come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that
