P 5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD. The reasons for chastening 6 Therefore thou hast forsaken thy peo- ple the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and are sooth- sayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers. 7 Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots: 8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. The promise of Wrath when CHRIST returns (Fulfilled - Rev 19:11-21) 10 1 Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty. Isaiah 3 The promise of Judah and Jerusalem’s fall to Babylon (Fulfilled - II Ki 25 - 586 BC) (Note - This portion of Isaiah’s prophecy took place in the year King Uzziah died , and 1 For, behold, the 7 LORD , the 8 LORDOF HOSTS , 9 doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the 10 stay and the 11 staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water, P the 1st year of King Pekah’s reign) Date Written - c. 748 BC/AM 3252
2:6 Isaiah points to the east (to the world; to Babylonian paganism and priorities) as to why Judah was corrupt. God’s people are supposed to shed light upon the world (Mt 5:14-16), not adopt the world’s darkness and its ways (I Jn 2:15-17, Rom 12:1-2 and I Cor 15:33 ). Unfortunately, often times with prosperity (vs 7) comes religious compromise, and with religious compromise comes idolatry (vs 8). Religious compromise affects everybody, both the mean man (lower class people) and the great man (upper class people) (vs 9). NOTE – Because the Jews were still corrupt, due to their socialization with the heathen, CHRIST ' S KINGDOM (foretold in 2:1-4) would be delayed till after the DAY OF THE LORD OF HOSTS (foretold in 2:10-22), when God will “ shake terribly the earth ” in judgment (2:19-21). The FATHER and SON’S joint effort to shake the earth will be followed by their joint reign, when they rule the earth together from Jerusalem ( Rev 11:15 ). According to the Bible, both the FATHER (Isa 24:23 & 25:6, Zech 14:16-17 and Rev 7:15 & 11:17 & 12:10) and the SON (Rev 12:5, Dan 7:14,27 and Lk 1:32-33) will both co-reign together to rule in the Kingdom to come. 2:12 Officially, the “ DAY OF THE LORD ” (Joel 2:31-32/Acts 2:20-21 and Rom 10:9-13), called here the “ DAY OF THE LORD OF HOSTS , ” is an extended period of time that begins with the onset of the Great Tribulation and ends 3½ years later with the personal return of Christ ( I Thess 5:2 and Rev 3:3 a,b & 6:5,6-8 a ). 3:1 This phrase ( the stay and the staff ) is a Hebrew idiom meaning “everything.” Everything that Israel depended on for their survival as a nation would be taken from them: that which sustains them ( the stay ) and that which protects them ( the staff ).
