21 8 And the Amorites, and the Ca- naanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites . P 15:6 Abram may not have known every detail concerning the Gospel of CHRIST ( I Pet 1:10,12 ), but he certainly understood enough of it to be saved ( And he believed in the LORD - Jn 8:56, Rom 4:1-5, Gal 3:6-8, Heb 11:17-19 and I Cor 15:1 ). 15:10 Ancient covenants were sometimes confirmed by the halving of an animal ( and divided them in the midst ) and the two parties to the covenant passing between them ( Jere 34:18 ), thus signifying the cutting of a covenant between the two parties. Here, however, God alone passes between the animal pieces (vs 17), indicating that God Himself was undertaking the fulfillment of all the conditions attached to the covenant ( Genesis 12 Subject Head ). 15:13 According to Exodus 12:40-41 and Galatians 3:17, Israel’s Egyptian bondage of 430 years was an exact period of time. The 400 years that are mentioned here in verse 13 are therefore judged to be part of that time (Acts 7:6). NOTE - This 430 year Egyptian bondage began in Genesis 12:10. 15:15 Abraham was not only promised a long life (he lived to be 175 years old – Gen 25:7-8), he was promised to be reunited with all of his believing ancestors ( And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace ) who had died years before in Babylon. The body may be buried far away, but the soul joins the company of its forefathers (Mt 8:11). The immortality of the soul is the thought behind the phrase. 15:16 The Amorites would face extermination because they defiled the land with how they lived ( the iniquity of the Amorites - Lev 18:24-28).
