The Spiritual Song - Exploring Prophetic Worship by Mike Herron
Evaluating the Spiritual Song
Evaluating the ‘spiritual song’ helps everyone to grow and become more effective in encouraging the church. Were the thoughts clearly expressed by the singer? Was the content scriptural and encouraging? Was there a sense of the presence of the Holy Spirit? How did it sound musically? What could be done better in how the instruments and voices interacted? Was the song too short, too long? Was the song shared at the most appropriate moment? Is the entire worship team being encouraged to express the prophetic song or is it centered in a single person? What were the visible and unseen results in the congregation’s response? What was really good about the experience?! Everything must be done with the spirit of encouragement rather than judgment. Singing a Spiritual Song of praise or prophecy is a big barrier for many people to cross and they will need generous amounts of affirmation. After the miraculous feeding of the 5000 Jesus told his disciples to put the crumbs in the baskets so each of them would have something to eat on their journey home. Some of the Spiritual Songs sung under the immediate inspiration of the Holy Spirit deserve to be gathered up and edited into congregational songs. They are able to feed the heart of the people again and again.
