10 ENTERING THE SPIRITUAL SONG

The Corporate Spiritual Song

I have developed a simple method over the years that helps people to enter the concept of corporate ‘free praise/spiritual song.’ I explain that we are going to have five, one-minute segments in the exercise. We prepare for each segment beforehand as once we begin there are no breaks in the exercise. I teach a simple two or three chord progression to the instruments so as to lay a musical foundation for the voices. The first segment everyone must sing their favorite Psalm-worship passage such as Ps 108:1 ‘My heart is confident in you, O God; no wonder I can sing your praises with all my heart. ..’ As the instruments begin to play I urge them to sing their own melody or simply chant these words to the Lord in a one note configuration. There is no wrong way or wrong notes as every note is a ‘grace’ note in the Kingdom of God. The main point is to verbalize together in the sound of many waters atmosphere with melody coming from your mouth.
