harps, for the ministry at the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the supervision of the king. Along with their relatives — all of them trained and skilled in music for the L ORD — they numbered 288. Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots for their duties. (1 Chron. 25:6-8) Asaph had 4 sons under his direction, Jeduthun 6 and Heman 14. Each of these 24 musicians had a group of 12 musical prophets under their direction totaling 288 full time worshipers. They were constantly training in music and in spiritual understanding so their prophetic time of ministry would be a rich experience. Their number 24, corresponds with the 24 hours of the day, the 24 keys of music (12 major and 12 minor) and the 24 elders in heaven who play harps and sing a new song of praise before the Lamb and the one who sits on the throne. There were young students involved as well as the seasoned veterans of musical prophecy. Worship ministry is supposed to be multi generational. Asaph and his sons were specially gifted in prophetic music: ‘ The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king’s supervision.’ It seems that King David could call upon them to prophesy on demand concerning the immediate circumstances that he faced.
