Chapter Six

The Shaking of the Heavens

One day in 1988, I was standing on a baseball field in the

middle of San Jose, California, surrounded by about 40 other

ministers. We had been assembled by several well-known

pastors from South America.

These pastors had taught us that we needed to “bind” the

strong demonic powers over our city, so that we might release

our churches to effectively reach the lost. For about an hour we

prayed, shouted, and sought to identify these powers by name

and bind them.

As I reflect on our earnest efforts, led by these gracious South

American pastors, I am not sure how much we accomplished

toward spiritually releasing the church in San Jose. But the

experience did wake me up to the authority of the church, and

its responsibility to act like those who have already won the

heavenly war.
