it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert (Isa. 43:18-19).

Jesus agreed with this when He taught his disciples to not put

new truth and divine ways into “old wineskins” (Mat t. 9:17). The

flavor of the past is sweet, and we savor it like vintage wine.

But new truth is dynamic and requires spiritual and social

stretching to build new types of structures and protocols. There

is no change in the gospel message, but the methods we use

in presenting it will need to change for each new generation.

Let me give you a recent example. With the coming of the

COVID pandemic, churches were forced to shut down public

services and move to online gatherings for teaching and

preaching. In many ways, this new medium for shepherding

and presenting the gospel doubled and tripled the number of

those listening to the messages.

During the pandemic I personally found myself teaching and

preaching more than ever, online. I firmly believe God was

opening new doors for us through opportunities to get outside

the walls of church buildings. The gospel did not change. Our

delivery did.

Yet, many pastors and people struggled and complained, and

even broke the law and endangered their own people to get

congregations back into buildings. They were bound by the old
