But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil (Heb. 5:14).
The key to spiritual maturity is rigorous persistent training of a
new believer in the word of God and its application. To discern
what is good and what is wrong in the performance of such a
vital and powerful ministry must become a stated goal for the
church. Prophetic training must not be just head knowledge but
hands on training in how to apply the word of God in daily living
and ministry. The word train in Hebrews 5:14 is where we get
the word “gymnasium” from. Training in prophecy under the
tutelage of a trusted and experienced prophetic leader is where
we must begin.
But this type of training cannot be done by just any church
member or leader. Such Leadership needs to appreciate this
gift, it must have a good biblical understanding of it and know
how to work with it. I have come to appreciate the importance
of learning the prophetic ministry in a spiritually well-covered
and trained group. I believe this concern is born out in the
formation of the very first prophetic school under Samuel.
Again, all God’s people are now candidates under the new
covenant to prophecy since they have the Holy Spirit. But how
best to draw out that gift and encourage such anointed
speaking will require specific training in scripture and faith to
