Chapter Fifteen

God’s Audacious Love

In 1956, five young missionaries purposed to make contact with

Huaorani tribe in eastern Ecuador – a tribe that had never been

reached with the gospel. The surrounding tribes referred to the

Huaorani as auca — savage. They were extremely dangerous.

Despite the risk, these five missionaries journeyed to the

Huaorani’s territory, attempting to reach out to them with the

gospel. The effort was dubbed “Operation Auca.” Sadly, it was

well named. The tribe responded by killing every one of the

young men.

A year after the massacre, Elizabeth Elliot, the wife of Jim Elliot,

one of the five young missionaries, determined to keep trying

to get through to this tribe for Christ. It was a courageous step

of faith – and it succeeded. Within two years of her husband’s

death, Elizabeth Elliot had not only brought the gospel to the

Huraorani, but had led to Christ the very man who murdered

her husband.

Jim’s death had moved Elizabeth Elliot to a higher commitment

of service to the Lord. She went on to write 20 books, and

shared her husband’s story with hundreds of thousands of
