in Acts 15:16 James used the wording “ After this I will return

and rebuild David’s fallen tent.” (Some translations of Amos

render the Hebrew there as “fallen shelter” or “ruined house,”

but others use “fallen tabernacle.” ) James’ use of the “tent” or

“tabernacle” characterization has profound implications.

For a Jew, the gracious promise found in the ninth chapter of

Amos was a pledge from God that He would restore the nation

of Israel; that He would restore the lineage and rule of David;

and that He would usher in for Israel a miraculous prosperity

that would touch all nations.

But James, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, radically

shifted this perspective. He singled out what Paul and

Barnabas were doing in their evangelizing of the gentiles as

fulfillment of this prophecy: Jesus was the longed-for

descendant of David (Matt. 1:1), the promised Messiah. Just as

King David established one of the most successful kingdoms in

Israel's history, so Jesus had now brought to earth the greater

Kingdom of God that would eventually rule the nations.

And what did “ David ’s fallen tent” have to do with the question

of salvation by faith alone in Jesus Christ?
