Chapter Ten

The Holy Spirit in the Harvest

When I was in junior college, our Christian Club lined up some

speakers for a “free speech” day on campus. I was one of them.

This was back in the mid-1960s when the Free Speech

movement was making national headlines at the University of

California in Berkeley. At other campuses across the country,

crowds of college students were gathering to speak out against

the war in Vietnam, for free love, and about whatever else

moved them

The day of our own event, people began assembling on the

campus quad as different students stepped up to the

microphone to say their piece. Then my turn came. I didn’t have

a prepared speech. Thinking through what I was going to say,

and full of anxiety, I walked to the microphone and looked out

at the crowd of college kids lounging around, listening

expectantly.

At that moment I felt the Holy Spirit touch me, and I began

speaking.
