The MAJOR & MINOR Prophets - The 16 Writing Prophets Of The Hebrew Canon
The Promises of Restoration in Two Areas (9:11-15)
A helpful key to unlocking the two parts of this section is to take note of the “I will” (God’s part) and “They shall” (people’s part) sequence. The Restoration of David’s Tabernacle This closing message of restoration is introduced by the words “in that day.” All of Amos’ previous discussion about divine judgment was not about revenge, it was all preparatory for God to bring in a better way. We need not strain for the interpretation of this better way, because the primary fulfillment has already taken place, as James clearly explained at the Jerusalem Conference (Acts 15: 13 21). The early Church faced the dilemma of whether or not to admit the Gentile converts without their keeping the law and circumcision. After much prayer and by divine revelation, the early apostles and Church grandly accepted the Gentile converts into the body of Christ on the basis of the love and grace of Jesus. This Scripture shows that a new Israel, the people of God has resulted-- not Jews only but converted Gentiles as well. A change-point in history had occurred as significant as that of Abraham and Moses: a new covenant had to be inaugurated! David’s dynasty was restored and Jesus now occupied the throne of David! Also, David’s tent-tabernacle which symbolized heart-and-spirit worship has been restored in the New Testament Church. The Restoration of the Captives In addition to the great spiritual work that was started through Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection and ascension to the throne of David, and is now at work in our day, the closing three verses (13-15) provides hope for a natural restoration for God’s people as well.
