Street Stories - A Ringside Seat To Over 4 Decades Of Taking Jesus To The Streets Of The World
This warning and the imposition of Martial Law was because Haiti was spiraling out of control, even worse than usual. Haitian drug dealing was not bringing in the illegal money they were used to so drug and gang lords had started kidnapping people, mostly Americans, and holding them for ransom. While we were on the streets ministering in Port au-Prince, a kidnapping took place within a few feet of us. We continued to take our cross to the streets and preach, in the shadows of UN tanks surrounding us as they tried all possible means to impose Martial Law. Many of the young UN soldiers we met wearing the blue helmets driving UN tanks were from Sri Lanka. You could tell many of them were frightened of the violence and preferred to be someplace else. Even in the shadows of UN tanks on the streets, preaching the Gospel reaped a harvest on the streets of Haiti. We continued driving back the forces of darkness. One afternoon as we were taking a short break, one of the local Christians told us of an epic celebration of Voodoo and dedication of a large brass pig that had been erected near the Mayor’s office in Port-au-Prince. It seems a few years prior the Voodoo celebration had been so large and memorable, an enormous statue of a brass pig was erected as a memorial. The young man told us, “Whatever you do, don’t go down there. It’s dangerous. The Voodoo worshippers are there night and day worshipping the brass pig.”
