Street Stories - A Ringside Seat To Over 4 Decades Of Taking Jesus To The Streets Of The World
would set up camp for the night. There were no hotels in the area because almost everything had been destroyed by the typhoon. The only available place for us to sleep was on a storm drenched concrete basketball court at the Catholic church. Before we left Los Angeles for the Philippines, Dot had put out the word for people to go to the Walmart website in their area and purchase small camping tents that we could use for our team and then give them to people in the Philippines when our trip was complete. Our team paired off two by two and pitched these small camping tents so we could stay dry in the night and get a good night ’ s sleep. Pastor Kelly and I shared a tent, and he picked a great spot on the basketball court. Being an experienced fireman, Pastor Kelly had some pretty cool survival gizmos we could implement. Inside our tent, he began to use a hand cranked instrument that would charge the battery of a cell phone. As there was no electricity for miles around, this gadget worked out well. Pastor Kelly was definitely the man you would want with you in any disaster. We also took a rope and tied a large tarpaulin to a nearby 12-foot pole and tied the other end to the side of the van. This gave us some shelter from the downpouring rain that continually started and stopped. As evening approached, darkness like I had never seen enveloped our campsite . There was not a sound of any kind in the distance. We got out some hanging lanterns and flashlights so we could see to maneuver. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a young girl walked up to our group. She and Gerson greeted each other, and it was apparent they were friends.
