Street Stories - A Ringside Seat To Over 4 Decades Of Taking Jesus To The Streets Of The World
One person who was there to serve the Lord was our dear, street ministry friend, Sondra Berry Young. Sondra was a fervent prayer warrior and witness for the Lord. She visited fire stations and police stations, taking them food and gifts to help bless them and lift their spirits. Also, our youngest daughter, Emily, flew into New York from Los Angeles to help minister and care for hurting people. She and some of the younger members of Abounding Grace, led by the Del Rio boys, went throughout the city witnessing for Jesus, handing out Gospel tracts and Bibles to people who were desperate for hope and answers. Emily told me that people would line up and wait for up to twenty minutes in line just to get prayed for and receive a Bible from them. People all over the city were hungry to know God. They realized many for the first time, life is fragile and can be gone in seconds. I took teams to Ground Zero and got as close as we could to the area where emergency personnel were working hard and furious to lift concrete and rubble from the pile, praying someone would be found alive, trapped underneath. That rarely happened. As we would be singing about Jesus and ministering to people, suddenly the sound of bagpipes would permeate the air, air that was still filled with smoke and ash emanating from the center of Ground Zero. As the chorus of bagpipes repeatedly played Amazing Grace, we would all stand at attention as a flag draped body would be brought to the surface and driven to the waiting authorities, carried atop a flatbed trailer.
