Rudy and Brian, evoking their military training, immediately slid the van door open and jumped out to confront these marauders. Rudy informed us later that in a kidnapping attempt, every minute counts to possibly be able to escape.

With every minute that passes, your chance of

escape and survival diminishes greatly.

I was sitting in the front bench-style seat of the van with our Muslim driver Mohammed on my right and Bill Henderson on my left. About that time one of the men on the motorbikes got off and approached Mohammed’s window. He rolled the driver side window down and conversed with the kidnapper. They were speaking Bahasa, so we didn’t know what the man said. But by the tone of the conversation, it sounded caustic. I looked out the front van window again and I could see Rudy and Brian confronting some of the men on motorbikes. Pastor Steve and Donny were in the back of the van helping Bill pull Roy back inside because he was being pulled out the side window by the kidnappers. Roy had opened the van window and said to the kidnappers, “Jesus Loves You” and was giving them Gospel tracts.

They responded by trying to pull him through the

window of the van and capture him.

Bill leaned across me in the front seat of the van and asked our driver, Mohammed, “What did they say to
