In Indonesia, cars travel on the left side of the road with the driver on the right. Especially with the earthquake damage to the local roads and extreme damage in Pariaman, we knew we needed a local driver.

Our driver’s name was Mohammed, and he was a

devout Muslim.

Our rented van pulled up to the hotel to pick us up and it was a beautiful grey van that would accommodate about a dozen passengers. We were delighted to have such a large van because that allowed us to load up large quantities of disaster relief supplies. By the time we got the van loaded and headed back to the epicenter of the earthquake in Pariaman, it was nearing lunch time. Just before we got out of Padang, we saw a semblance of life in America. Right before our eyes was a KFC. Man, oh man, we could smell the chicken and fixins’ all the way out to the street. We instructed Mohammed to pull over so we could all go in and get some KFC. Mohammed waited in the van. As our ministry team hurriedly made our way toward the entrance of the KFC, we noticed a beggar sitting on the ground rattling his tin cup, hoping someone would drop a few coins in it for him. One of his legs was off at the knee.
