“We were shaken like matchsticks,” said students from the Padang Industrial Technic Academy. “Up to now we haven’t been able to reach Padang. Communications have been cut.” It was September 30 th , 2009. This was the initial report from the Indonesian Geophysics and Meteorology Agency. As I went online and saw pictures and read about this catastrophic earthquake in Indonesia, that ultimately killed 1,115 people with over 2,600 injured and 1,250,000 people affected, I knew we would be taking a Disaster Relief Team there. The 7.6 magnitude earthquake was centered in Padang Pariaman on the coast of Sumatra. This island is situated within a zone of high seismic activity known as “The Ring of Fire.”

I began to make calls to my closest disaster relief
