Street Stories - A Ringside Seat To Over 4 Decades Of Taking Jesus To The Streets Of The World
question I asked her, “Why don’t you want this Bible.” She rocked my world with her response.
“I can’t take it. It is too great a gift. I’m just a
commoner!”
“No. No,” I told her. “You are not just a commoner. You are so very special to Jesus and He gave His life for you. This gift is for you. You are not just a commoner.” I could tell she had never heard those words before in her life. In the Communist system, she had been cast as a commoner, not worthy of such a great gift as the Bible. She believed she was born to live on the lowest rung of society, and she was unworthy. But her eyes suddenly brightened up a little and a small smile crossed her face. It was like a light had been switched on in her life. I reached out to her again with the Bible, and with hands trembling, she took this too great a gift from me. She was suddenly exhilarated and clutched her new Bible. I explained to her Jesus died for the commoner. He came for the sick, those who need the Great Physician. He came for those who are lost so they could be saved. I told her the Bible is a great gift. Jesus is the Greatest Gift. Holding her Bible, she turned away from me and slipped off into the crowd gathered near Saint Basil’s Cathedral. I knew I would never see her again in this life. In my heart I knew even though so many great things had happened for the Lord while we were in Russia, she was the lost sheep Jesus had brought me halfway around the world to find.
