Months before Kim’s final arrest she had handed us some papers that had been notarized granting her father custody of Cleo if she, herself, could not care for Cleo. We took Cleo into our home and cared for her for a time. It was very hard to do with already having a two year old, four-year-old and a six-year-old. Our very close friends, Dave and Linda Stanley, from Temecula, California, took her (with Kim’s permission) for a while and gave Cleo the love and care she had never had before. Kim told us by telephone she would be in jail for a long time and that if we couldn’t care for Cleo, we should give her to Kim’s father who lived in the Northwestern United States. Because Kim had told us awful stories about how her father had abused her, we were more than hesitant to hand this beautiful little girl over to him. We honored Kim’s wishes and called her father. He had such a kind voice on the telephone. He wanted to take care of his beautiful granddaughter. When Bobby and I met this man at the Burbank Airport to give him his granddaughter, he sensed that we were uncomfortable with the situation, and he told us so. I quite frankly told him my hesitation. I had been told that he had beaten Kim regularly as a teenager. According to him, her story turned out to be an exaggeration. Cleo’s name has been changed to a name that she wouldn’t be teased about as much. I’m sure personalized trinkets with the name “Cleopatra” would have been hard to find. Although Kim’s father wanted to raise his granddaughter, Kim’s mother thought it was a very bad idea. They had been through a lot raising Kim and her mother didn’t feel she could go through it again.
