Then, one day, God burst our little bubble wide open! He called us to work with street kids and homeless people in Hollywood, California. I don’t recall ever having seen a homeless person in Carrollton, Texas, where we were living at the time. We lived in a newly built home where we picked the flooring, the brick and everything about the house in a newly built neighborhood. The children in the neighborhood were well taken care of. The nursery at our church couldn’t have been more beautiful. What a wonderful, comfortable cushy life we were living. Then, we moved to Hollywood and became friends to prostitutes, runaways, homeless people…people who were not clean, people who had no place to call home. Some of the prostitutes had babies! For some reason that was just inconceivable to me. The children were not being read Bible stories, they weren’t watching Sesame Street on television, and they certainly were not going to Sunday school each week – or ever. When we got to Hollywood I began to work with Judy in the office and began babysitting Charles and Judy’s two children, Michael and Melissa. Our five children were together so much we became like family. Kimberly was a beautiful teenaged prostitute that we befriended and brought to the House of Magdalene. Over about a year and a half, Kimberly came to the ministry house and left again several times. Her pimp’s name was Mordechai and they had a baby together whom they named Cleopatra. It may be hard to fathom, but one of the rewards a pimp gives the girls in his stable is letting her have his baby!
