Horatio Spafford owned a significant portion of that property all along the waterfront of Chicago – and much of his buildings and properties were burned up in that fire. As I listened to the story, I couldn’t help but marvel at this man’s faith. Here he had just lost his precious son, even as he was crying out to God for a miracle of healing. And now add in the loss of his property and holdings that were destroyed by fire. How much can a soul endure? Why do such terrible things happen to such godly and devout people? Where was God in all of this? The story continues… The City Recorder came to Horatio and told him it was imperative that he attend a special town council meeting that was scheduled to happen in a few days. At this meeting they were going to redraw property lines for all of the properties downtown, along the waterfront area of Chicago. They were forced to do this because all the deeds, land plats and maps etc. at City Hall had been burned up in the fire. The City Recorder strongly urged Horatio to be at this meeting because of his significant property holdings in that area and the clerk could not guarantee he would be apportioned back the entirety of his properties if he was not there to represent his holdings… Horatio realized that he had to be at that meeting, yet the voyage was scheduled to embark earlier than that meeting so he arranged for his wife and four daughters to board the cruise at the original booked time. He planned to join them in Europe on a later cruise after he had properly taken care of the property mappings at City Hall. Just before he was to leave on his cruise, he received an urgent telegram from his wife. It was a telegram informing him that
