ROMANS Study Guide

Chapter Ten :

The Way of Salvation

Paul ends chapter nine with the Gentiles finding the salvation that the Jews had so long sought after under the Law. Now Paul moves on in chapter ten to continue his concern for Israel but also to talk about our salvation that comes only by faith in Jesus Christ. Rom 10:1 Brothers, truly my heart's desire and prayed to God for Israel is for it to be saved. Rom 10:2 For I bear record to them that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. Rom 10:3 For they, being ignorant of God's righteousness and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God. Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness for everyone who believes. Rom 10:5 For Moses writes of the righteousness which is of the Law, "The man who does those things shall live by them."

1. Paul re-emphasizes his deepest heart felt concern and constant

prayer for his people to be saved: vs.1-3

a. Paul witnesses that his people are zealous (having great ardor)

for God but not according to (true or correct) knowledge (from scripture

and experience)

b. They being ignorant ( agnoeho : to not know, not understand, to

err by mistake) of God’s way of justification (righteousness) and

attempting to establish their own righteousness have not

submitted or subjected themselves unto God’s way of

righteousness (as seen in Abraham…Rom.4).

Paul is not being high handed with the Jews. He is deeply concerned for them and acknowledges their sincerity . But they have sincerely missed God’s way to be righteous before God. They have pursued righteousness by the law missing the whole purpose of the law which is to show that none can achieve God’s righteousness by the law.

The logical end of the law is Christ since no one can be justified by keeping the law… so everyone must be saved by simply believing in Jesus Christ. Jesus alone fulfilled the law completely then turned himself into a sacrifice to God to take our sins and give us his righteousness. Those who believe and trust Jesus for this amazing substitution see the end of the law over their lives as a way to be justified
