ROMANS Study Guide

a. We as believers continue to suffer in this mortal body - but it is not to

be compared to the amazing glory that will be revealed in us as God’s

children. We must fulfill the sufferings of Christ to finish his redemption

of the world. (Col.1:24)

b. Creation itself has been caused to suffer because of Adam’s fall - it is

also waiting for the full manifestation of the Sons of God. Paul is saying

that as God’s children come into their “full liberation” creation itself will

be released to its restoration and release. This may well be the gift of

the church in full worldwide revival – causing us to call nations to good

stewardship of our natural resources.

1) The word “him” some think refers to God but may well be a

reference to “mankind” at his fall.

2) The Suffering of nature is part of the “birth pangs” indicating our

approaching full redemption. (Mk.13:8; Matt.24:8)

a) Extinction of some animals b) Loss of the rain forests c) Global warming d) Loss of coral reefs (source of oceans life)

The Suffering Church (vss.23-25)

6. Creation and the church have two things in common - we groan and we

anticipate.

a. We who have the first fruits of the Holy Spirit: This is references to us

having the Holy Spirit as a pledge of our full redemption to come.

(Eph.1:13-14)

b. We groan and long for our full redemption - our resurrection bodies

c. Without hope we cannot go on: we must anticipate a better future.

1) Paul says we are saved (rescued, healed, delivered) by our hope of what is to come. Hope here is faith in God’s future action…a strong confidence like an anchor (Heb.6:19).
