ROMANS Study Guide
converted by God through the power of the Holy Spirit
(Phil.2:12-13) into a servant of the Holy Spirit. This is
an ongoing and progressive work of God in us.
b. You are Spiritual (not carnal) if you are yielded to the Holy Spirit
“dwelling” ( Oikeo : Occupying space ) in you. vs.9
1) A simple definition of being lost - “Not having the Holy Spirit
(The life of God) in you!” (Rom.8:9)
2) Paul is making us face a strange Dichotomy of our inner life…
As believers we have Jesus’ life in us… but we also have the
inner dynamic of having an “infant” new nature that is still
assaulted by our canal nature (Rom.7:23; 1Cor.3:1-3) that
has not been “put to death or crucified.” This fleshing controlled
life is what Paul describes in Rom.7:23 allowing the Law of Sin to
still work in our life.
a) Paul compares the Carnal (fleshly believer) to an immature child
or baby in 1 Cor.3:1. In this context the Believer has not
grown as they should have…but they are still reflecting the
old attitudes and selfish life tendencies like when they
were lost.
b) Such a believer cannot handle spiritually “meaty” teaching
that only a more mature believer can understand. (See
also Heb.5:12-14)
3) Eventually our bodies and soulish life will also experience full
Redemption or transformation (Rom.8:11 and also Eph.1:14).
4) Paul is clear, there is nothing we owe the flesh life that we
should regard it or look to it for any spiritual benefit (vs.12)
