ROMANS Study Guide

Rom 6:18 Then being made free from sin, you became the slaves of righteousness. Rom 6:19 I speak in the manner of men because of the weakness of your flesh; for as you have yielded your members as slaves to uncleanness, and to lawless act unto lawless act, even so now yield your members as slaves to righteousness unto holiness. Rom 6:20 For when you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. Rom 6:21 What fruit did you have then in those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. Rom 6:22 But now, being made free from sin, and having become slaves to God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end everlasting life. Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

c. Slaves to righteousness:

Paul is confident that these Roman Christians have indeed

come to live in the power of Jesus’ death and new life.

(vss.17-23)

1. But Paul is clear that we cannot in our strength obey God – but

as we yield to his Holy Spirit – working from our new nature - we

find ourselves able to live a Christ-Like life. We can please God

as our hearts surrender our will to his will. Paul calls himself a

slave of Jesus Christ.

For he who is called a slave in the Lord is a freed man of the Lord. And likewise, he who is called a free man is a slave of Christ. (1Co 7:22)

a) It is our goal to so surrender to the will of God in Christ as to

become his absolute servant (slave) – to accomplish his will.

b) Stewart Briscoe drives home the point that Paul saw the solution to

dealing with Sin in the believer’s life as one of building a

growing relationship with Jesus . It is not a focus of law, or power

or duty. It is a focus on embracing the Holy Spirit and learning to

listen and obey his leading and living in his strength (living in the

presence of God – the atmosphere of heaven – Matt.6:10).
