did resulted in his descendants doing also. The example Paul uses is that the fact that the Aaronic Priesthood paid tithes to the Melchizedek Priesthood (a shadow of Christ’s Priesthood) while still in Abraham. This will become important for us to understand as we get into chapter 6 and come to understand what we have received in Christ.
b. Paul in this chapter deals with the issue that there was no law
from Adam to Moses…
1) There must be law to expose sin and reveal our separation from
God as a consequence for disobeying it. So why did those after
Adam die in sin without the law?
2) “In the likeness of the transgression of Adam.” Adam had
broken a clear law – “don’t eat the fruit of the tree of
knowledge.” Adam was a law breaker. But sin after Adam
was not breaking any written or divinely communicated law.
And yet, all died from Adam to Moses as a result of sin. We
participated in Adam in his law breaking. (Gen.2:17). As a
result we all die for our “own sins.” We inherit a fallen nat ure
which brings a “propensity” to sin which we all have given into.
So we are condemned by our fallen nature causing everyone
of us to violate the will of God. (Rom.3:23)
Rom 5:15 but the free gift shall not be also like the offense. For if by the offense of the one many died, much more the grace of God, and the gift in grace, which is of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. Rom 5:16 And the free gift shall not be as by one having sinned; (for indeed the judgment was of one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offenses to justification. Rom 5:17 For if by one man's offense death reigned by one, much more they who receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by One, Jesus Christ.) Rom 5:18 Therefore as by one offense sentence came on all men to condemnation, even so by the righteousness of One the free gift came to all men to justification of life. Rom 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One shall many be made righteous. Rom 5:20 But the Law entered so that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound, Rom 5:21 so that as sin has reigned to death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
