a) The early church does not seem to have had a problem

with sending out women in apostolic roles who would

then (with her husband) establish churches and ordain

elders, etc..

b) Paul has been accused of belittling women in ministry

but in this last chapter he is recognizing many of his co-

workers as women.

d. The name of “Rufus” in this chapter, according to William Barclay,

could well be the son of Simon the Cyrenian who helped carry

Christ’s Cross (Mark15:21… Simon had two sons named Alexander

and Rufus). Mark would not h ave mentioned names of the son’s if

they had not had some reputation in the early church.

e. Paul finishes his greetings with the ancient expression of greeting

by giving the pure or holy kiss and a general greeting by all the

Gentile Churches, he represents. (vs.16)

Rom 16:17 And I exhort you, brothers, to watch those making divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which you have learned, and avoid them. Rom 16:18 For they who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches they deceive the hearts of the simple. Rom 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

2. Paul shifts from acknowledging faithful leaders to warning against

unfaithful leaders. vss.17-20

a. Mark them (be aware of them) ...who cause divisions (dissensions)

and offenses (traps or snares) … catching people with dividing

arguments contrary (against) the doctrines (beliefs) you have

learned and so avoid them (shun them).
