ROMANS Study Guide
is aiming at… we must make the unity and mission of the church our
primary goal for the glory of God. vss.4-7
a. Paul points out that we must draw strength and “Hope” ( Elpia :
anticipation, joyful confidence) from God to endure “sacrificing
our self- rights” and putting the needs of others first. Where does
that wisdom and strength and love come from?
1) From the testimony of Scripture…and power of the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit strengthens us according to God’s word.
vs.4
a) From God’s word the Holy Spirit can minister to us hope b) He can minister endurance (patience)
2) From this strength and hope comes God’s ability to bring such
different people into “one mind and unity!” Vs.5
b. Paul says the goal of the church is not to stress our differences but in patience and encouragement
we must stress our unity and the things that unite us in Christ. What glorifies the Lord is when we
speak with one mind and one mouth.
c. We must a ccept one another then (with all our differences… both weak
and strong) … just as Christ accepted you with all your weaknesses
and problems… to the praise and glorifying of God. vs.7
Rom 15:8 And I say, Jesus Christ has become a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers, Rom 15:9 and that the nations might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written, "For this cause I will confess to You in the nations, and I will praise Your name." Rom 15:10 And again He says, "Rejoice, O nations, with His people." Rom 15:11 And again, "Praise the Lord, all the nations, and praise Him, all the peoples." Rom 15:12 And again Isaiah says, "There shall be a root of Jesse, and He who shall rise to reign over the nations, in Him shall the nations trust."
3. Paul shifts here to once again review his unique calling as the
Apostle to the Gentile Nations: vss. 8-12 Paul drops back to his theme
of evangelizing both Jew and Gentile through the gospel.
