My personal experience Before I became a Christian, I was a businessman in Vancouver, Canada. I was doing quite well in my career, and my business was experiencing growth which paid healthy dividends. My life — on the outside — looked pretty good by natural standards. I had a brand-new company vehicle and a sleek two-seat sports car. Money flowed freely, and I had just joined a prestigious golf course — a clear status symbol in the business owner community. One day, a man named Art, an evangelist, came into my shop to have some repairs done on a church van. I had a deep respect for anyone in ministry, so I gave him a great deal on the work. While the mechanics worked on the van, Art and I struck up a conversation. One thing led to another, and before long, he invited me to one of his church meetings. A couple of weeks later, I felt a pull to visit his church. But when I showed up, Art wasn’t there, he was traveling again. Instead, a pastor named Ken was preaching that Sunday. It seemed like the invitation had come at the wrong time, but I decided to stick with it. As I was driving around on Sunday trying to find the church, I noticed quite an aged dome building. I thought to myself this couldn’t be a church. I drove back and forth in front of this building not really wanting to go inside, yet the spirit of God was drawing me. Here I was driving around in this brand new sports car, dressed up real nice and proceeding into a pretty ragged old dome-looking building called a church. I went in, sat down, and thought nothing much of it. After the service, the people were very friendly and they asked me to come back to the mid-week service, which was on Wednesday night. I responded affirmatively and went back home.
