God's Prophetic People

A. The Divine Encounter 1. Abraham A man who stands out throughout history as a landmark in the spiritual history of the world had divine encounters with the Lord. He was chosen by God to become the father of a new race, yet his life before the divine encounter was that of a heathen. He was born in Ur of the Chaldeans and lived in a place of security and certainty, which his family provided. Then the divine encounter with Yahweh took place, as is recorded in Genesis 12. The result: receiving an inner drive/passion which saw him through many different situations and lessons to be learned: • Surrendering the knowing with the unknowing (exhibiting faith for the future) • Surviving the lesson of patience (waiting years for the promise of God to come to pass) • Sustaining himself through trials and even failures (speaking falsehoods in a cowardly way regarding Sarah his wife, Genesis 12:19, 20:2) • Subduing the enemy (rescuing Lot from captivity, Genesis 14) • Supporting others in their time of need (interceding wholeheartedly for Lot and family, Genesis 18) • Seeking continually after a city whose builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11:10) orator, leader, historian, and patriot are but a few. Yet the first forty years of his life were quite far from godly. He was raised as Pharaoh’s son in all of the ways of Egypt. He was mighty in his words and deeds. One day Moses went out and looked upon the burdens of the Hebrews and saw an Egyptian beating one of his people (Exodus 2:11). In the next verse, we read that Moses killed the Egyptian.
