literally thousands through his sermons, like the Sermon on the Mount. He could calm the stormy sea with a spoken word. By His presence alone, demons would shriek, come out, and beg for mercy. He was the One who, upon touching peoples’ eyes, restored their sight. The Apostle Paul really understood the significance of Jesus’ death as an unmasking of the powers of the world (Co - lossians 2:15). It was at the cross of Calvary that the climactic point of Jesus’ life took place. This was where He disarmed the powers of evil and turned the scales of power upside down (or perhaps right side up). John 14:12 says that greater works shall we do than this. What a challenge. What a privilege. What a task. • A Sign = A miraculous truth which points to a deeper truth and reveals God’s character and nature. • A Wonder = Something strange to us which causes man to marvel at God’s power. We must always keep in mind that the supernatural always points us toward the Lord Jesus Christ. As we adhere to this framework, the Body of Christ will be strengthened, Christ Jesus will be exalted, and His Kingdom extended. II. The Purpose OF SIGNS AND WONDERS “Biblical miracles have a clear objective: they are intended to bring the glory and love of God into bold relief. They are intended, among other things, to draw man’s attention away from the mundane events of everyday life and direct it toward the mighty acts of God.” - Evangelical Dictionary of Theology 13 “ Works of God . When the word ‘sign’ is used in the plural together with ‘wonders’ (mopet) the events are understood to be the works of God, or attestations of His active presence among His people.” - The New Bible Dictionary 14
