3. Dispensational Premillennialism
A Basic Definition. "The view of many modern fundamental ists and conservative evangelicals. The Rapture plays a key role and occurs before the seven-year Tribulation (or in the middle of the Tribulation-and for some, at the end). The 'church age' is really a 'parenthesis,' in which God's dealings with Israel are put on hold while he builds the Gentile church." 9 Dispensationalism has become popular because of its distinc tive teachings on the end times, such as the imminent, pretribu lation Rapture of the Church. Imminent means, in this case, that no Scripture prophecy remains unfulfilled to keep Christ from coming at any time. The Rapture, occurring before the Tribula tion, is the secret catching away of the Church so she will not en dure judgment and divine wrath. The glorious Second Coming of Christ will occur after the Tribu lation and inaugurate a literal thousand-year Millennium here on earth at a time yet future. During this time Christ will reign on earth, ruling the world from Jerusalem. All the promises made to national Israel will be fulfilled literally at this time, and there will be a virtual restoration of the Old Testament economy. All believers will be resurrected bodily at Christ's coming to share in His millennial reign. Revelation 20 yet remains future. This school of thought divides all history into seven dispensa tions, or periods of time. We are now in the sixth dispensation, characterized by grace, and called the Church age-the era of
