B. Sanctification is both instantaneous and continual - instantaneous as we are shown our need for sanctification and as we yield to God; continual as we progress in God and continue to yield. Romans 12:2; Ephesians 5:26, 27. NOTE: Sanctification represents a growth IN holiness, rather than INTO holiness out of something else. It doesn't all happen at once, but rather is a progressive work of the Holy Spirit as we grow in our understanding of God's will. 6. WHAT PRODUCES THIS WORK OF SANCTIFICATION? Eight things are mentioned in the New Testament that produce sanctification in the Christian's life: A. GOD THE FATHER: Jude 1; 1 Thessalonians 5:23. B. THE BLOOD AND SACRIFICE OF CHRIST: Hebrews 9:14; 10:10, 14, 29; 13:12. C. THE HOLY SPIRIT: Romans 15:16; l Corinthians 6:11; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Peter 1:2. D. THE WORD OF GOD: John 17:17, 19; Acts 20:32; Ephesians 5:26; 1 Timothy 4:5; 2 Peter 1:2. E. A SAVED HUSBAND OR WIFE: 1 Corinthians 7:14. F. PERSONAL EFFORT: 1 Thessalonians 4:3; 2 Timothy 2:21; 1 Peter 3:15. G. FAITH: Acts 26:17. H. PRAYER: 1 Timothy 4:5. 7. HOW CAN WE RECEIVE THIS WORK OF SANCTIFICATION? Our basic attitude and will must be affected by the Holy Spirit so that: A. We realize that our own will is contrary to the will of God. Romans 8:7.
