God And His Word - A Question And Answer Approach To Understanding The Bible
LESSON 4: HEALED BY HIS STRIPES 1. WHAT DOES "HEALING" IN ISAIAH 53:5 REFER TO? "Healing" in this text refers to the miraculous curing or restoring of a person's physically sick body to a sound or healthy condition. This definition is simple and obvious, yet many people are not fully convinced that God can actually heal the human body apart from natural means or medicine. 2. WHAT DOES "WITH HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED" MEAN? This expression teaches us that God's method of healing the sick is through the beaten, whipped body of the Lord Jesus Christ that bled for us. 3. HOW DO WE KNOW THAT THIS EXPRESSION ACTUALLY REFERS TO JESUS? The best way to interpret the Old Testament is to find its fulfillment in the teaching of the New Testament. Isaiah 53 is linked clearly with Matthew 8 - where we find that Jesus' ability to heal people's physical sickness was a direct fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy. Matthew 8:16, 17 - "(he) healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled…Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses." l Peter 2:24 - "by whose stripes ye were healed." 4. THE BIBLE RECORDS 17 BODILY CURES PERFORMED BY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST (He healed MANY more, of course, but these were recorded in the Gospels to give us faith): Nobleman's son healed, John 4:46-54. Infirm man healed, John 5:1-9. Peter's mother-in-law, Matthew 8: 14-17; Mark 1:29-31; Luke 4:38, 39. A leper, Matthew 8:2-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-15. A paralytic, Matthew 9:2-8; Mark 2:3-13; Luke 5:17-26. Man with withered hand, Matthew 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11. Centurion's servant, Matthew 8:5-13; Luke 7:1-10. Two blind men, Matthew 9:27-31. Deaf and dumb man healed, Mark 7:31-37. Blind man at Bethsaida, Mark 8:22-26. Blind man in Jerusalem, John 9.
