THAT HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO OVERCOME DEATH AND THE DEVIL FOR US. 2 Timothy 1:10; Hebrews 2:14; 1 Corinthians 15:57. 8. WHAT DO WE MEAN WHEN WE CALL JESUS "THE CHRIST"? CHRIST means "the CHRISTened One" or "the Anointed One." The Hebrew word for Christ is Messiah. In the Old Testament period, prophets, priests and kings were anointed with oil for their public ministries. Jesus was anointed, not with oil, but with the Holy Spirit without measure! 9. FOR WHAT THREEFOLD OFFICE WAS CHRIST ANOINTED? Christ was anointed to be my Prophet, Priest and King. A. AS MY PROPHET, Jesus revealed perfectly God's will for the redemption of mankind. He proclaimed the message; He was the VOICE of God, the communication. Deuteronomy 18:15; Matthew 17:5; John 1:17, 18; Luke 10:16. B. AS MY PRIEST, Christ fulfilled the Law in my stead perfectly, sacrificed Himself for me and still intercedes for me with His heavenly Father. Galatians 4:4, 5; 1 Corinthians 15:3; Hebrews 7:26, 27; 1 John 2:1, 2. C AS MY KING, Christ with His mighty power rules over all creatures, governs and protects His Church, and finally leads it to glory. Matthew 28:18; John 18:33, 37; 2 Timothy 4:18. 10. WHAT TWO STATES DO WE SEE IN CHRIST'S WORK OF REDEMPTION? The state of humiliation and the state of exaltation.
