barracks were built off the ground about eighteen inches and were skirted all the way down to the ground to prevent snow and ice buildup and mud from causing damage to the structures underneath. I slept in unoccupied buildings and sometimes in the beds of others who were trusted and so graciously gave them up. I even slept in minimal confined crawl spaces constructed under beds with trapdoors that gave entrance and exit to passage under the building. It was like a constant hide-and-seek game, but with grave results if discovered. These passages were used for travel to other barracks for secret meetings, and for communication. It was also a way to smug gle contraband supplies of food, shoes, clothing, blankets, and other things that could be stolen or could be taken without permission. Most of the places I slept had very little heat and very little or no comfort. Fortunately I was twenty-eight years young, very strong, and healthy. Food was only survival portions, barely enough to stay alive. These men gave up their food from the beginning and sometimes were able to barter some extra handfuls through under ground sources, but there was always very little of this sometimes 52
