be followed. He prayed—and apparently He expects us to pray—that Christians would be filled with Jesus’ love. His most famous statement on the subject in John 13:34, 35 should be in our prayers because we know that it is even now in His:
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, as I have Loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
Peter and Job: Something in Common Two very interesting verses are included into the Gospel record which give insight into Jesus’ deep concern for the disciples as well as how He prayed for them individually, and how He intercedes now:
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permis- sion to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. 12
It is not apparent in our English translations that the first “you” is in the plural in the Greek text, indicating Satan’s desire to sift all the disciples. However, when Jesus says “I have prayed for you,” He is speaking directly to Peter, and “you” here is singular. Notice the wording of these verse in the Amplified Bible :
Simon, Simon (Peter), listen! Satan has asked exces- sively that [all of] you be given up to him [out of the power and keeping of God], that he might sift [all of] you like grain, [Job 1:6-12; Amos 9:9]. But I have
