The left hand represents the ministry and gifts provided by the ministry. The right hand represents the faith and authority provided by the ministry. As Moses was providing all the support in the beginning of the account he was able to only provide one or the other, but not all of the blessings of spiritual covering and authority at one time. Like most presiding leaders who are called upon to provide all or the majority of the ministry and faith for a church or ministry, Moses became weary. Both the people of God and the vision of the Lord su ff ered as a direct result. Then came Aaron and Hur, as a representation of local eldership. Their main function was to see that the people and the vision are taken care of by caring for the needs of the presiding leader. To do this they fi rst sat Moses upon a rock. The rock represents the foundation of Christ, The Rock. When Moses sat, that represented that he was able to rest. The best ministry is accomplished through rest. There is an oxymoron in scripture which asks us to labor to enter into rest. This is exactly where the blessings may abundantly be supplied, when the leader is able to minister through a place of rest. The supporting eldership can do a lot toward providing an atmosphere of rest so that ministry can be most e ff ectively accomplished. Hebrews 4:11 (KJV), “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest 13 ...” When they stood at his side they showed support to him in his position. Then they lifted up his arms. When Aaron and Hur provided a place where Moses could minister through a place of rest, they were able to enter into ministry service themselves as they took on some of the burden of his ministry. Likewise, when a minister fi nds faithful leadership who will help bear his burden, he has found those with the heart of a steward. When Moses was carrying the ministry alone, he was not able to accomplish everything at the same time. But when Aaron and Hur came as support ministry both of Moses’ hands were able to be lifted up at the same time and held up until the victory was established. It is interesting that God wanted Moses to write these things down as a memorial for Joshua who would one day be the presiding elder in Moses’ stead. And then Moses did a very interesting thing, he built an altar and called the place Jehovahnissi which means The-LORD-Is-My-Banner. When true Godly ordained leadership is working together for the good of God’s people, completing His vision, God provides a covering, a relational protection, which allows supernatural results not possible through our own methods and plans, it is God’s plan. Ma tt hew 11:28 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
