PROVERBS 30:9

5 A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for 1 his feet. 6 In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice. 7 2 The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it. 8 Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath. 9 If a wise man contendeth with a fool- ish man, whether he rage or laugh, 3 there is no rest. 10 The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul. 11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. 12 If a ruler hearken to lies, 4 all his ser- vants are wicked. 13 The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes. 14 The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever. 15 5 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. 16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall 6 see their fall. 17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul. 18 Where there is no 7 vision, the people 8 perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. 19 A 9 servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer. 20 Seest thou a man that is 10 hasty in his words? 11 there is more hope of a 12 fool than of him. 21 He that delicately bringeth up his servant froma child shall have himbecome his son at the length.

22 An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. 23 A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. 24 13 Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and 14 bewrayeth it not. 25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. 26 Many seek the ruler’s favour; but every man’s judgment cometh from the LORD. 27 An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked. Proverbs 30 The words of Agur Date Written - c. 1007 BC/AM 2993 1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal, 2 Surely I am more 15 brutish than any man, 16 and have not the understanding of a man. 3 I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy. 4 17 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his 18 SON’S name, if thou canst tell? 5 Every word of God is 19 pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. 6 20 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. Two worthy goals 7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:

1. that is, “his own feet” 2. Job 29:16 3. Note – To best a fool ( If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man ) is to get bested ( whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest ). 4. Hag 2:11-14 5. Prov 22:15 6. that is, “outlive the wicked and see their fall” 7. or, “prophetic revelation” 8. or, “suffer” 9. or, “rebellious servant” 10. Jms 1:19 14. or, “reveals” 15. or, “stupid” 16. that is, “As a man, I cannot comprehend an infinite God” 17. Job 38-41 & Jn 3:13 & Rom 10:6,7 & Eph 4:8- 10 & Psa 68:18 18. Isa 7:14 & 9:6 19. Psa 19:8 20. Rev 22:18 & Deut 4:2 21. I Tim 6:8 11. Prov 26:12 12. Prov 17:28 13. Isa 1:23

8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; 21 feed me with food convenient for me: 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, 29:18 Where there is no “open revelation” ( vision ) from God, the people are unrestrained and fall under judgment (perish). 29:20 If you can’t talk without a brain, how is it that some people without brains ( fool ) do so much talking? 29:25 The “ fear of man ” always contaminates godly decision-making. Look at what it did to Adam (Gen 3:17), King Saul (I Sam 15:24-30), God’s prophet (I Ki 13), plus many other Christians (Jn 12:42-43). We should never tailor our lives or God’s message just to gain human approval (I Thess 2:4-6 and Gal 1:10). 30:1 Agur’s name means “gatherer.” Some have suggested that Agur might have been another name for Solomon. 30:4 Agur questions his readers, “Who on earth can adequately describe God?” Agur continues, “The only revelation we have of Him will be His SON (Psa 2:7,12, Isa 7:14 & 9:6 and Dan 3:25 & 7:13 & 9:25-26). When the ANOINTED ONE (Psa 2:2) (the MESSIAH - Dan 9:25-26) comes, then and only then will we be able to begin to grasp who God really is.” 30:7 Agur begs God to protect him in two areas with regard to his character: 1. The temptation associated with the company he keeps (vs 8) 2. The temptation associated with having too little (poverty) or having too much (pride due to fullness of bread) (vs 8-9)
