PSALMS “MINI” SERIES The Doctrine Of The OT MESSIAH
I. Who HE Is
Lesson 1. Who is the OT MESSIAH ?
One of the Hebrew forms of the word for Messiah in the Old Testament is the word Mah-shee-agh (Dan 9:24-26). The word means “ to anoint; to rub with oil .” This word, used as an adjective, is mentioned 39 times in the Old Testament. It is translated “ anointed ” 37 times and “ Messiah ” 2 times (Dan 9:25-26). Although mah-shee-agh is translated “ anointed ” in I Samuel 2:10,35 and Psalm 2:2, it could have been translated “ Messiah ,” seeing these verses also refer to Christ. Mah-shee-agh is used to describe three different “anointed” offices in the Old Testament: 1. The “ anointed ” office of prophet : Abraham (I Chro 16:22 and Psa 105:15) 2. The “ anointed ” office of priest : Aaron (Lev 4:3,5,16 & 6:22) 3. The “ anointed ” office of king : Saul (I Sam 12:3,5 & 24:6,6,10 & 26:9,11, 16,23 and II Sam 1:14,16,21) David (I Sam 16:6, II Sam 19:21 & 22:51 & 23:1, II Chro 6:42 and Psa 18:50 & 20:6 & 28:8 & 84:9 & 89:38,51 & 132:10,17) Cyrus (Isa 45:1) Zedekiah (Lam 4:20) In full revelation of God toman, which ismade through Jesus, these three specific offices are apportioned to Christ, all of them synchronizing to produce the final, complete and effective salvation. These three offices, commonly set forth in the Scriptures as being channels of Christ’s work for lost men, name Him (Christ) to be prophet , priest and king ( Rev 1:5 ): 1. Christ, the “ anointed ” Prophet (Deut 18:15,18,19/Acts 3:20-23 and Jn 1:19-21 & 7:40-41) 2. Christ, the “ anointed ” Priest (Psa 110:1-4/Heb 5:5-6 & 6:20 & 7: 1- 3 ,14-28) 3. Christ, the “ anointed ” King (Zeph 3:15/Mt 2:1-4 & 22:41-46 & 27:42, Jn 1:49 & 12:13, I Tim 6: 14- 15 b , Heb 1:13 and Rev 19:16) NOTE - According to Andrew (Jn 1:41) and the woman at the well (Jn 4:25), the CHRIST and the promised OTMESSIAH are one in the same, for whatever is said of the OT Messiah must also be true of the NT Christ. Seeing that “light” is a picture of both salvation (Isa 49:6) and Christ (Lk 2:30-32 and Jn 1:6-14 & 8:12), and there is but one “Savior,” i.e., one Light, which is God (II Sam 22:3, Isa 43:3,11 & 45:15,21-22 & 49:26 and Hos 13:4), then Christ is God, the Savior/Redeemer of the world. Titus 2:13 agrees. Quoting the original Greek, it reads, “ Looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and Savior [of us] Jesus Christ .” NOTE - According to the Samaritans (Jn 4:42), the promised OT MESSIAH would be the SAVIOR/ REDEEMER of the world, God Himself in the flesh! Interestingly enough, those in the New Testament who recognized Jesus Christ as the promised OT Messiah (Savior/Redeemer of the world) also recognized His deity (Mt 1:18-23 and Lk 1:26-35 & 2:10-11) and worshipped Him as God (Titus 1:3-4 & 2:10,13 & 3:4-6). Those who rejected His claim to be the promised OT Messiah refused to worship Him as God (Mk 2:1-7). According to Job 19:25, Genesis 22:8, John 1:29,36, Hebrews 9:11-28, I Peter 1:19 and Revelation 5:6-9, the promised OT Messiah (the Lamb of God - Isa 53:7) would be God Himself in the flesh (the Savior/ Redeemer of the world - Job 19:25). Psalm 2:7-12 is the very first time God used the term “ Son ” to describe the Second Person of the Triune Godhead. God would use this term only five more times throughout the Old Testament (Prov 30:4, Isa 7:14 & 9:6 and Dan 3:25 & 7:13). In every case, the term “Son” (Psa 2:7,12, Prov 30:4 and Isa 7:14 & 9:6), “Son of God” (Dan 3:25), and “Son of Man” (Dan 7:13) pointed to the promised OT Messiah. NOTE - According to Isaiah (Isa 7:14 & 9:6-7), David (Psa 2/Acts 13:30-33), Peter (Jn 6:68-69), Martha (Jn 11:24-27), the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26-37), and Paul (Acts 9:17-20), the promised OT MESSIAH would be the SON OF GOD , God Himself in the flesh! Interestingly enough, those in the New Testament who recognized Jesus Christ as the promised OT Messiah (Son of God) also recognized His deity and worshipped Him as God (Jn 1:32-34 & 9:35-38 and Mk 15:39). Those who rejected His claim to be the promised OT Messiah refused to worship Him as the Son of God (Jn 5:17- 18 & 10:30-36 and Mt 27:35-43). 937 Isaac (I Chro 16:22 and Psa 105:15) Jacob (I Chro 16:22 and Psa 105:15) Moses (Hab 3:13)
