God’s blueprint for prayer (See - Lk 11:1-13) 9 And 1 Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! 4:10 When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray “ as John also taught his disciples ,” Jesus used the “Prayer of Jabez” as a pattern ( Lk 11:1 ). Note the similarities between the “prayer of Jabez” and the “pattern (or, blueprint) for prayer” that Jesus taught His disciples. Prayer is communicating with God on His level. His level included seven areas: 1. I Chronicles 4:10 “ And Jabez called on the God of Israel ” (Jabez recognized who God is and praised Him) Luke 11:2 And he (Jesus) said unto them, “ When ye pray, say, Our FATHER which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name ” (Jesus taught his disciples to recognize who God is and to praise Him) 2. I Chronicles 4:10 “ saying, Oh that thou wouldest “ (Jabez cried, “Be it your pleasure .”) Luke 11:2 “ Thy kingdom come Thy will be done , as in heaven, so in earth ” (Jesus taught his disciples to seek God’s pleasure ) 3. I Chronicles 4:10 “ bless me indeed” (Jabez asked for provision ) Luke 11:3 “ Give us day by day our daily bread. ” (Jesus taught his disciples to ask for provision ) 4. I Chronicles 4:10 “ and enlarge my coast ” (Jabez understood the principle of helping people ; the more we have the more we can help) Luke 11:5-6 “ And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a FRIEND (that is, a friend in the FATHER ) , and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, FRIEND , lend me three loaves; For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? ” (Jesus taught his disciples to ask the HEAVENLY FATHER for other people ) 5. I Chronicles 4:10 “ and that thine hand might be with me ” (Jabez asked for God’s power ) Luke 11:13 “… how much more shall your heavenly FATHER give the HOLY SPIRIT to them that ask him ” (Jesus taught his disciples to ask for God’s power ) 6. I Chronicles 4:10 “ and that thou wouldest keep me from evil ” (Jabez asked for God’s protection ) Luke 11:4 “ And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from EVIL ” (Jesus taught his disciples to ask God to protect them from themselves, the world, and the EVIL ONE) 7. I Chronicles 4:10 “ that it may not grieve me! ” (Jabez understood the principle of penitence ; the more we forgive the more God hears us and the less we are grieved. God can’t forgive us and answer our prayers until we’ve first forgiven others) Luke 11:4 “ And forgive us our sins ; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us ” (Jesus taught his disciples penitence - asking forgiveness only after we’ve forgiven - Mt 6:14-15)
