GENESIS GENESIS woman’s desire shall be “against” her husband and his leadership. A woman’s original design instinctively and intuitively sets off within her a natural reaction, which wants to rebel against submitting to a “lesser” creation. It is always unnatural for that which is “better” to have to succumb to that which is “inferior.” Why else would it be commanded, if it came naturally (Eph 5:22-24)? Randy Alcorn in Heaven notes: …most commands assume a resistance to obeying them, which sets up the necessity for the command. 24 3:17 God’s apparent intent in the “curse” wasn’t just punishment. It was to rig the world so that mankind’s best efforts to make life and relationships work without reliance on Him would constantly be frustrated. God’s good even when things appear bad. Everything is designed to draw men and women who stray back to the Designer. 3:20 According to Edith Deen in All of the Women of the Bible there are 162 named women within the Bible. 26 Eve, of course, is the first woman to be mentioned in the Scriptures. Eve’s name means “life-giving.” She is referred to 7 times in the NT (Mt 19:4, Mk 10:6, I Cor 11:8-9, II Cor 11:3 and I Tim 2:13-14). 3:21 When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden, we read that God himself “clothed” them with the skins of innocent animals ( COATS OF SKINS ). To procure those skins blood had to be shed and the innocent had to be slain in the stead of the guilty. Only then could man’s shame be “covered.” If innocent blood be not shed in atonement for sin, then the blood of the guilty must be shed in a fiery judgment on sin. 27 Jeff Kinley in As It Was In the Days of Noah notes: After Adam and Eve’s sin excursion in the Garden, God provided animal skins for earth’s first couple, covering the symbol of their sin and shame – their nakedness. An animal (perhaps a lamb) was slain by God to make this possible... And this ritual became God’s prescribed pattern until the ultimate sacrifice was made on the cross. 28 These sacrifices depicted CHRIST’S death (Jn 1:29), offering every sinner the “covering of God’s righteousness” (Rom 3:21-26 & 5:19 & 10:1-4 and II Cor 5:21), which pictures the “completeness” of God’s salvation (eternal security – Psa 37:28 ). NOTE – Adam and Eve may not have known every detail concerning the Gospel of CHRIST ( I Pet 1:10,12 ), but they certainly understood enough of it to be saved ( I Cor 15:1 ). 3:22 Only God can judge rightly ( to know good and evil ). Whenever man thinks he can do what only God was meant to do (judge rightly - Gen 18:25), humanity suffers (Gen 3:16-19). Because man chose the tree of the knowledge of good and evil over the tree of life (note - both trees were in the midst of the Garden - Gen 2:9,17 & 3:1-3), man chose “knowing what God knows” ( to know good and evil ) over just “knowing God.” And therein lays our problem… NOTE – There were four kinds of trees in the Garden of Eden: (1) Trees to behold (pleasant to the sight – Gen 2:9); (2) Trees for food (and good for food – Gen 2:9); (3) The tree of life (Gen 2:9), which represented God Himself; and (4) The tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen 2:9), which represented God’s knowledge of right and wrong; and thus His right to judge. The tree of life stood in the very “center” of God’s Garden. It was symbolic of the fact that God Himself was, and is, the source, i.e., center of eternal life, wisdom (Prov 3:13-18), hope (Prov 13:12), healing (Ezk 47:12/Rev 22:2), and blessing (Prov 11:30 & 15:4). It was God’s desire that Adam and Eve were to have their life “centered” in Him. What they desired, however, was to “know what God knows,” over just “knowing God,” and it led to the demise of the entire human race. 1 Tribble, Harold W.
