King Shalmaneser V of Assyria wars against King Hoshea of Israel (S/A - II Ki 18:9) (Note - This event took place in the 4th - 5th year of King Hezekiah’s reign) Date - 723 - 722 BC
burnt sacrifice, and his meat offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings; and sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the brasen altar shall be for me to enquire by. 16 Thus did Urijah the priest, according to all that king Ahaz commanded. 17 And king Ahaz cut off the borders of the bases, and removed the laver from off them; and took down the sea from off the brasen oxen that were under it, and put it upon a pavement of stones. 18 And the covert for the sabbath that they had built in the house, and the king’s entry without, turned he from the house of the LORD for the king of Assyria. Historical Note - Assyrian history continued c. 727 BC with the New Kingdom Period in which Shalmaneser V (c. 727-722 BC) assumed Assyria’s throne. 3 Against him came up 1 Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents. 4 And the king of Assyria found conspir- acy in Hoshea: 2 for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no pres- ent to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison. 5 Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Sa- maria, and besieged it three years. Israel is taken captive to Assyrian strongholds Map #233 16:20 Hezekiah’s name means “ Jehovah is strength.” He is referred to 2 times in the NT (Mt 1:9-10). Hezekiah is the 19th generation from CHRIST . 17:4 So (king of Egypt) was none other than Shabaka, the son of Ethiopia’s king (Piankhi). When Ethiopia had established herself over Egypt a few years earlier, Hoshea king of Israel sought to buy the help of the newly formed Ethiopian/Egyptian alliance in order to defend itself against the Assyrians. It failed and in 721 BC. Sargon, a general turned king after Shalmaneser’s death, led Hoshea and Israel into captivity. The prophet Isaiah would warn Hezekiah king of Judah about making the same alliance nine years later in 713 BC (Isa 18:4).
