JOSHUA
Author: Joshua (Josh 24:26) Theme: Conquering What’s Yours (the conquest of Canaan) Book’s Main Character: Joshua
About the Author: Joshua, whose name means “ Jehovah saves,” was the son of Nun and the assistant and successor of Moses. We find Joshua first mentioned in Exodus 17:8-16 where he is commanding the Israelites in their victory over the Amalekites at Rephidim in 1487 BC. A few months later, when Moses moved the Tabernacle outside the camp, Joshua was placed in charge over it (Exo 33:11). A year later in August of 1486 BC, when Israel was about to enter Canaan, Joshua and Caleb were the only two men among the twelve spies to give an encouraging and favorable report concerning their forty-day journey (Num 13:21-14:9). Thirty-eight years later in 1448 BC, near the end of their wilderness wanderings, Moses was directed by God to appoint Joshua as his successor (Num 27:18-23). About the Book: The book of Joshua is the story of God’s people entering the Promised Land, conquering their enemies, and dividing the land among the twelve tribes. The book begins with the death of Moses (Josh 1:1) and ends with the death of Joshua (Josh 24:29). The book of Joshua covers some 52 years (from April 1447 - c. 1395 BC). Notes of Interest: 1. Joshua’s Last Days and Death (Josh 23-24) Joshua 1 The LORD exhorts Joshua (59 years old) Date - Apr 6th, 1447 BC/AM 2553 1 Now after the 1 death of Moses the ser- vant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ 2 minister, saying, 2 Moses my 3 servant is dead; now there- fore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, 4 that have I given unto you, 5 as I said unto Moses. 4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphra- tes, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, 6 shall be your coast. 5 7 There shall not any man be able to
stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: 8 I will not fail thee, nor 9 forsake thee. 6 10 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. 7 Only be thou strong and very coura- geous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant 11 commanded thee: 12 turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest 13 prosper whithersoever thou goest. 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt 14 medi- tate therein day and night, that thou may- est observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

1:1 Joshua’s name means, “ Jehovah saves” (just like Jesus - Mt 1:21). Joshua is referred to 2 times in the NT (Acts 7:45 and Heb 4:8). 1:2 Moses represented the Law, and the Law cannot save (Gal 3:10-13). The Law is a revealer ( Rom 3:20 & 5:13a ), not a redeemer. Only Jesus (Joshua - Josh 1:1 / Acts 7:45 ) can lead us into the place of blessing. 1:8 a “ Meditation” is reflection and application. It is thinking about what you are reading and then applying it to your life by obeying the principle (Rev 1:3 and Amos 7:7 ). 1:8 b The law was written for the sake and success of others. We succeed whenever others succeed spiritually around us. NOTE - There are two ingredients necessary for others to prosper and succeed around us (Mt 22:34-40): (1) God’s Word ( this Book of the Law ); and (2) Our obedience to God’s Word ( thou shalt meditate therein day and night ). Thus, success is nothing more than finding things daily in the Bible to obey that will result in others succeeding spiritually. THE ADAGE IS TRUE: : You can succeed at success and still not succeed; for if success is succeeding at the right thing, then failure must be succeeding at the wrong thing 402
