DEUTERONOMY

Author: Moses (Deut 31:24, Mt 19:7,8 & 22:24, Mk 12:19, Jn 5:45-47 and I Cor 9:9) Theme: Reviewing the Law (so as to renew the mind - Rom 12:1-2) Book’s Main Character: Moses (Moses is referred to 101 times in the New Testament)

About the Author : Moses, whose name means, “to draw out,” was born into slavery in Egypt c. 1568 BC. He was born approximately sixty-four years after Joseph’s death (1632 BC). Moses’ first forty years were spent training in Pharaoh’s Court. His second forty years were spent tending sheep in the wilderness of Midian. And his third and last forty years were spent teaching God’s people His ways on the way to Canaan (called the Promised Land). Moses died before the children of Israel entered Canaan (1448 BC - Deut 34:5). About the Book: The book of Deuteronomy means “second law,” and is simply a review of some of the laws given in Exodus and Leviticus. This “second law” was given to the new generation while encamped in the plains of Moab just one month before they crossed over the Jordan River and entered Canaan (the Promised Land). The book of Deuteronomy covers a little more than one month (from February 1st, 1448 - March, 1448 BC). Notes of Interest: 1. Deuteronomy is quoted in the NT 63 times. 2 of those 63 quotes refer directly to CHRIST . 2. Prophecies are referred to 10 times in Deuteronomy . 3. Prophecies concerning CHRIST are referred to 3 of those 10 times. 4. CHRIST quoted Deuteronomy more than any other OT book ( 22 times). 5. There are 4 inset maps used in the book of Deuteronomy . They are numbered chronologically (#71 -74). Outline of Deuteronomy :

1. Review of Israel’s History (Deut 1-11). 2. Review of Israel’s Laws (Deut 12-30). 3. Moses’ Last Days and His Death (Deut 31-34). Deuteronomy 1 Moses reviews Israel’s history Date Written - Feb 1st, 1448 BC/AM 2552

3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in command- ment unto them; 4 After he had slain 1 Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and 2 Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei: 5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying, 6 The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, 3 Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount: 7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Ca- naanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates. 8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your 4 fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

1. Num 21:21-31 2. Num 21:32-35 3. Num 10:11-13 & 33:1 4. Gen 12:7 & 15:18-21 & 17:8 & 26:3 & 28:13 5. Num 11:11-14 6. Note - The phrase “ ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude ” is simply a pun (a play on words – Gen 3:14 ). It’s another way of saying that the children of Israel were a “great multitude.”

1 These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab. 2 ( There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.)

This is why the “words” of the LORD OF HOSTS are not in blue within the first thirty chapters of Deuteronomy. An 11-day journey to Kadesh-Barnea - Map #71
